Elders In the Presbyterian tradition, a particular church is led by an elected group of congregational members called the session. The word Presbyterian comes from the word ‘presbyter’ meaning elder. For Presbyterians, elders are people elected by the congregation to govern the church’s business.Together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, active elders exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church as well as the church at large. This includes strengthening and nurturing the faith and life of the congregation.
